Status: concrete for flag pavilion and three of the light pedestals is poured, all lighting conduit is in.  Forming is complete for the stairs up to the platform; scheduled to pour at 9am Thursday.  After that pour and some site cleanup, machine grading will be done around the pavilion and the walkway path cleared.  Depending on progress and weather, the ribbon curb forms may be installed then.  If weather delays any of the above, plan is to lay the paver walkway without a ribbon curb border, leaving the pavers uncut, so the edge will look like a saw tooth, but will still provide a safe, accessible walkway to the ceremony area.  Then the ribbon curb will be installed sometime after the flag raising ceremony.   Pavers have been delivered to site.

As noted, weather may put a crimp in concrete forming / pouring activities, but I am still planning for sod delivery Friday.  Laying efforts will have to work around the concrete / walkway construction, but we should be able to lay sod around the flag platform and in the area between it and the trailer / stage location.

I will have the trailer moved into place Friday afternoon after the sod is delivered.  My vision has the trailer on the northeast side of the flagpole (about where the real stage will be constructed), with the ramp on the NW end, towards the daycare center. Please send a picture of setup if your plan is different from this.

The 10 pallets of sod was a guesstimate intended for just the area around the flag platform and the walkway.  If we get more rain, the access from W. 1st street is going to be pretty muddy.  We may want to consider ordering more sod Monday for Tuesday delivery.

This project is supported by all Beaches Veterans Service groups, with participation from the American Legion, VFW, FRA, MOAA, Oceanside Rotary and others.  The VFW and Oceanside Rotary have combined to donate $25,000 for an 80 foot flagpole and lighting.  The remaining portions of the project are funded by a grant from COJ and by funds raised by the Vet Organizations .

A request is for construction of a decorative flag pavilion to surround the flagpole to be located at Beaches Veterans Memorial Park, on the NW corner of Atlantic Blvd and Mayport Road (end of West 1st Street) was broadcast.  I apologize for the short turnaround on this request, but construction must be completed in time to support a Dedication and Flag Raising Ceremony to be conducted on Veteran’s Day, November 11th.  To facilitate sharing questions and answers with other parties, please send any questions or comments by email.  Quote includes requirement for selected contractor to transport fill material from Public Works yard to site – I hope to start transport of some material this week to reduce the quantity shown in the quote request.

I’m hoping for a healthy ‘veterans discount’ for a very worthwhile project.
